(…) Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission (…) told French radio that the UK is “closer than ever before” to entering the single currency, because of the fallout from the global financial crisis.
He said that “people who matter in Britain are currently thinking about” membership, adding that the country was sufficiently pragmatic to drop its traditional hostility to the currency if there was a strong economic case.(…)
He added: “I don’t mean this will happen tomorrow, I know that the majority are still opposed, but there is a period of consideration underway and the people who matter in Britain are currently thinking about it.”
Presumo que, tal como noutros assuntos comunitários, as “pessoas que contam” são as que tem uma opinião favorável. As restantes não devem ser tidas nem achadas nestas questões.

Eu percebo as diligências e insinuações de Barroso, ou se preferirem “seduções” aos ingleses. Mas é não os conhecer. Há duas condições de base para a existência de uma união monetária, e elas não se preenchem sequer na Europa do Euro. Mais a mais acrescida com a Inglaterra.
