Ter que associar a Primavera árabe – com tudo o que de mau trouxe para a liberdade de imprensa – à, cada vez maior, importância das redes socais, parece-me no mínimo redutor. All these verbal games grow out of the notion that complexion tells you who is to be blamed and who is not. It is a dangerous game because race is no game. If the tragic history of the old Jim Crow South in this country is not enough to show that, the history of racial and ethnic tragedies is written in blood in countries around the world. Millions have lost their lives because they looked different, talked differently or belonged to a different religion.
In the midst of the Florida tragedy, there was a book published with the unwieldy title, “No Matter What … They’ll Call This Book Racist.” Obviously it was written well before the shooting in Florida, but its message — that there is rampant hypocrisy and irrationality in public discussions of race — could not have been better timed.
Author Harry Stein, a self-described “reformed white liberal,” raised by parents who were even further left, exposes the illogic and outright fraudulence that lies behind so much of what is said about race in the media, in politics and in our educational institutions.
He asks a very fundamental question: “Why, even after the Duke University rape fiasco, does the media continue to give credence to every charge of racism?”
Harry Stein credits Shelby Steele’s book “White Guilt” with opening his eyes to one of the sources of many counterproductive things said and done about race today — namely, guilt about what was done to blacks and other minorities in the past.
Let us talk sense, like adults. Nothing that is done to George Zimmerman — justly or unjustly — will unlynch a single black man who was tortured and killed in the Jim Crow South for a crime he didn’t commit.
Letting hoodlums get away with hoodlumism today does not undo a single injustice of the past. It is not even a favor to the hoodlums, for many of whom hoodlumism is just the first step on a path that leads to the penitentiary, and maybe to the execution chamber.
Winston Churchill said, “If the past sits in judgment on the present, the future will be lost.” He wasn’t talking about racial issues, but what he said applies especially where race is involved.

Houve um jantar de curso e nesse jantar o Cravinho a certa altura chama-me de parte e diz: “Tens algum tempo livre?”. E eu disse: “Tenho, mas porquê?”; “Eu precisava de ti para uma empresa”; “Que empresa?”; “Agora não interessa, a gente daqui a uns tempos fala”. Passado uns tempos chamou-me e disse-me: “Eu quero que vás para a Junta Autónoma das Estradas, mas não digas a ninguém que o gajo que lá está [Maranha das Neves] nem sonha”. O Cravinho deu-me os 10 mandamentos do que eu precisava de fazer na Junta, limpar a casa, obras que era preciso fazer, etc. Entretanto, comecei a conhecer a casa, dei a volta ao país todo e um dia disse-lhe: “Há aqui uma série de coisas que é preciso fazer e há 11 fulanos que é preciso pôr na rua”. Ele retorceu-se, chamou-me daí a dois dias, disse que era muito complicado. O problema é que era através de uma das pessoas que eu queria pôr na rua que passava o dinheiro para o PS.

The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years.
The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century.
Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.
Meanwhile, leading climate scientists yesterday told The Mail on Sunday that, after emitting unusually high levels of energy throughout the 20th Century, the sun is now heading towards a ‘grand minimum’ in its output, threatening cold summers, bitter winters and a shortening of the season available for growing food.
Solar output goes through 11-year cycles, with high numbers of sunspots seen at their peak.
We are now at what should be the peak of what scientists call ‘Cycle 24’ – which is why last week’s solar storm resulted in sightings of the aurora borealis further south than usual. But sunspot numbers are running at less than half those seen during cycle peaks in the 20th Century.
Analysis by experts at NASA and the University of Arizona – derived from magnetic-field measurements 120,000 miles beneath the sun’s surface – suggest that Cycle 25, whose peak is due in 2022, will be a great deal weaker still.
According to a paper issued last week by the Met Office, there is a 92 per cent chance that both Cycle 25 and those taking place in the following decades will be as weak as, or weaker than, the ‘Dalton minimum’ of 1790 to 1830. In this period, named after the meteorologist John Dalton, average temperatures in parts of Europe fell by 2C.
However, it is also possible that the new solar energy slump could be as deep as the ‘Maunder minimum’ (after astronomer Edward Maunder), between 1645 and 1715 in the coldest part of the ‘Little Ice Age’ when, as well as the Thames frost fairs, the canals of Holland froze solid.
Podiam simplesmente dizer: “Nós gostamos é de vos assustar. Entreguem-nos 1% do PIB ou desmantelamos uma parte da indústria que faz-vos carrinhos e telemóveis”. Era mais frontal e directo.
Eu devia ter desconfiado quando a solução para CO2 a mais era acabar com a indústria e não plantar árvores (o que, sendo eu de Ponte de Lima, seria uma medida que me agradaria bastante do ponto de vista emocional).
Esta malta é como a Administração Bush a gerar medo para tornar as suas políticas aceitáveis. E a imprensa, sempre interessada em vender com mais um título pomposo, cumpre o seu papel.
Triste. Mas expectável.

A Associação 25 de Abril não participará este ano, pela primeira vez, nas celebrações oficiais da Revolução dos Cravos por considerar que «a linha política seguida pelo atual poder político deixou de refletir o regime democrático herdeiro do 25 de Abril».
O anúncio foi feito em Lisboa pela direção da associação, de que fazem parte alguns dos chamados “Capitães de Abril”.

Todos aqueles que defendem a conservação da vida selvagem em África viram esta causa prejudicada quando os espanhóis e os europeus reagiram indignados à imagems do rei de Espanha diante de um elefante abatido. Manter as reservas e parques onde estes animais sobrevivem implica controlar o número de exemplares e isso pressupõe que às vezes eles têm de ser abatidos. Se há quem esteja disposto a pagar – e muito mas esse é outro assunto de que não trata este post – isso é positivo para a manutenção desses espaços. Por outro lado as reservas e os parques não podem ser vistos pelas populações locais como uma imposição de gente branca que come galinhas mas não consegue ver matar uma galinha e que se deleita a ver documentários “sobre a Natureza” sentadinha nos sofás do hemisfério norte enquanto eles não retiram qualquer benefício daquelas terras reservadas aos animais. (…) Esperemos que esta doideira do politicamente correcto passe ou em África os elefantes perderão terreno.

A carta do motorista foi apreendida pelo que presumo que o carro tenha sido conduzido pelo próprio Mário Soares.
