Remembering Rothbard. Por Steven Horwitz.
This month marks the 15th anniversary of the death of Murray Rothbard, arguably the most important libertarian theorist of the twentieth century. Although I only met him once in person, his work was influential in developing my “calling” in a number of ways, and the way he approached his scholarly and activist work for libertarianism over his life provides a number of lessons for advancing our own callings and the freedom movement more broadly.

Over the years I have also turned to another thinker as a role model for my academic work: the Austrian economist Israel Kirzner. Kirzner’s patient and deep scholarship, and commitment above all else to truth in economic understanding, should be an inspiration for those of us in the scholarly world. But what’s missing from Kirzner is exactly what Rothbard at his best provided: a clear and radical vision of the free society and a passion for that freedom which was present on every page.
What libertarianism needs right now, when the stakes in the battle of ideas have never been higher, is the passion of Rothbard tempered by the patient and deep scholarly values of Kirzner, with both put in the service of the vision of the free society that Rothbard gave us during his long and illustrious career.

Por muito que goste de Krizner como economista, Rothbard (que só dizia bem de Krizer) será um dos poucos académicos na história a fazer nascer um movimento social intelectual E popular-político com consequências (ideas have consequences), a única forma de promover a mudança. Cada um tem o seu papel e contribuição, mas o de Rothbard é o de ser completo, generalista e especialista como académico economista historiador e na filosofia (de certa forma Hayek também o foi), mas abordando a política polémica do dia a dia e das grandes questões, em todas as formas e facetas, fazendo escolhas. Fazendo dos neocons inimigos no momento em que nasciam (anos 80) como os intelectuais do regime (nada aconselhável como carreira), não deixando morrer a memória da Old Right. Ron Paul é o complemento político certo do Rothbardianismo, e terá conseguido fazer germinar no mainstream o radicalismo tranquilo necessário a motivar um anti regime-centralismo-social-democrata-de-esquerda-e-direita anti wellfare-warfare-state (o paradigma do nosso tempo). E o movimento começou num mini-modestíssimo apartamento de NY. As dissidências (Cato Institute depois de ser seu fundador, Libertarian Party depois de ser seu fundador, Ayn Rand, etc) fazem parte da sua consistência não de mudanças de direcção. Tinha o espírito de Mises mas alargado ao combate político corrente.
