Anti-British propaganda in Portugal – June 13, 1939
It was suggested to a group of Portuguese journalists, who were being shown the most impressive sights of the Reich a few weeks ago, that the historic role of Portugal, should be that of “the fulcrum of the lever by which the British Empire would be over-turned.”
The “Pax Britannica”, it was either implied or directly stated, was destined to be succeeded, sooner or later, by the “Pax Germanica”.

The British Government is not ignoring these open and disguised efforts to undermine Portuguese faith in the future of Britain.
The British Council is energetically at work in Lisbon and Oporto, giving English lessons, explaining British cultural achievements to all inquirers, and distributing prizes for English in the Portuguese schools. An Old Vic Company visited Lisbon recently.
Next month the British Press Attache, Mr Marcus Cheke, is bringing a party of Portuguese journalists toEngland.
In a speech before the National Assembly on May 22 Dr Salazar, the Prime Minister, reaffirmed his country’s faith in the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance.
